How often do objects fall on Jupiter?

It’s been reported that an object, presumably a comet, hit Jupiter on July 19th. Are such events rare? I’ve heard that Jupiter is like a ‘vacuum cleaner’ of the Solar system, only it uses its gravity to attract rocks and comets, thus protecting inner planets, including Earth. If this is the case, there should be many events like this one. Or is it only discussed because its date coincides with the Shoemaker-Levy collision 15 years ago?

Jupiter sits right behind the asteroid belt and has a mass of around 318 Earth’s. That’s pretty awesome for a gravity well and a perfect location for nice capture of impacting objects. It still has the other three gas giants that can attract objects from well beyond and send it into the giant itself. However, Jupiter isn’t always a vacuum cleaner, gravitational encounters need to be in perfect timing and location plus speed to occur. As such, Jupiter also hurls objects away from it or keep them in sync with its own revolution such as some Titans in its own orbit. However again, Jupiter still would be like most planets in receiving impacts. If Earth is rained down by meteors of more than a ton per day, Jupiter would have much more than that. Here on Earth, most meteor strikes even the moderately large ones (those as large as office tables) may strike a few times monthly but having more ocean than land, they always go unnoticed. So if we are to observe Jupiter 24/7, we would certainly see more. It’s just that unlike Earth, Jupiter would have certainly grounded the object long before it can be a noticeable impact candidate because of its intense magnetic field, a very thick atmosphere, a flock of numerous (and even large moons) and a highly energized plasma sheet (due to Io) tha can pulverize impactors. For the large ones, however, that would be a different story. Earth’s last major collision with an asteroid or a cometary body would be around 3-15 million years, for impacts created by objects more than 2km wide. If Jupiter will have this every 15 years, then that would be quite a feat. Jupiter, however has no solid surface. All signs of impact would be erased long before the next one collides with it.

Clear skies!
